On 22nd August 2023, the student teachers of AITE, Attur, visited Kerala Kalamandalam, the renowned institution dedicated to classical arts. The visit provided us with an enriching experience and an opportunity to witness the essence of Kerala's cultural heritage.
Kerala Kalamandalam, established in 1930 by the great poet Vallathol Narayana Menon, holds a place of pride as the premier institution for traditional Kerala art forms. It is globally recognized as a center of excellence for learning, training, and performing classical art forms such as Kathakali, Mohiniyattam, Koodiyattam, Thullal, and Panchavadyam. The institution has played a pivotal role in reviving and sustaining these ancient art forms, many of which were on the verge of extinction. Kerala Kalamandalam is more than just an educational institution; it is a cultural sanctuary where art, tradition, and heritage converge to inspire future generations.
During the visit, we had the privilege to meet Kalamandalam Sajith Vijayan, a dedicated teacher of Mizhavu, a traditional percussion instrument used primarily in Koodiyattam performances. He conducted an insightful and detailed session, introducing us to the history, significance, and contributions of Kerala Kalamandalam in preserving and promoting classical art forms. His explanations deepened our understanding of the institution's role in nurturing traditional Kerala art forms.
As part of our visit, we were fortunate to observe the practice sessions of two major classical art forms of Kerala: Mohiniyattam and Kathakali. The graceful movements of Mohiniyattam, characterized by its soft, flowing gestures and expressions, captivated us. We also witnessed the intricate and powerful practice of Kathakali, renowned for its elaborate makeup, costumes, and expressive storytelling through dance and gestures.
The visit was both informative and inspiring, as it allowed us to appreciate the dedication and discipline required to excel in these classical art forms. Kerala Kalamandalam's serene environment and commitment to preserving cultural traditions left a lasting impression on all of us.
The visit to Kerala Kalamandalam was a memorable experience that provided us with valuable insights into Kerala's rich artistic heritage. The significance of Kerala Kalamandalam as a custodian of traditional art forms highlights the importance of preserving our cultural legacy. It motivated us to value and support the preservation of these timeless art forms for future generations.
During our visit, we explored various departments and machinery used in different engineering courses. The college's green campus, with its eco-friendly initiatives and well-maintained facilities, left a lasting impression on us. The visit offered valuable insights into the integration of technology and sustainability in education. We were introduced to the latest innovations in the engineering field and had the chance to witness the hands-on training provided to students. It was inspiring to see how the college fosters both academic excellence and environmental responsibility, creating a conducive environment for learning and development.
One of the most impactful moments of our visit was the motivational speech delivered by Mr. Mansoor Ali, the manager of MCET. He shared an inspirational message with us, emphasizing the unpredictability of life and the importance of embracing challenges as opportunities for growth and learning. His words encouraged us to view obstacles not as setbacks but as chances to develop resilience and improve ourselves. His speech resonated deeply with us, reinforcing the idea that challenges are an integral part of personal and professional development. This visit to MCET not only broadened our knowledge but also inspired us to approach our future with a positive and proactive mindset.

ZERO PLASTIC CAMPAIGN IN AITE CAMPUS, PANJAL
AND MULLOORKKARA PANCHAYATH
As an Environmental Day 2023, the Environmental Clubconducted an awareness in the campus community and also to residents of Attur - in both Mullurkkara and PanjaalPanchayth. A cleaning drive was also carried in both Panchayths. The objective of the zero plastic campaign was to create an awareness on reducing the plastic wastes, effective recycling and plastic waste management, and potential health risks associated with burning plastics and also the environmental impact of dumping plastics in open spaces.
Initially, the AITE students conducted a cleaning campaign 22,23 November 2023 in both the above-mentioned panchayats to provide a positive example for everyone on how to reduce plastic waste, sort it, and sent it for recycling. Along with raising awareness and distributing pamphlets about how to reduce plastic trash generated at home, they also conducted a survey to find out how much people know about the aforementioned facts. This was a follow up of the same campaign conducted in June 6,7 2023, to asses the impact of the awareness program.
SURVEY ON USAGE OF PLASTIC AND AWARENESS TO LOCAL RESIDENTS AT PANJAL AND MULLURKKARA PANCHAYTHS
Related to the zero plastic campaign the students created a straightforward questionnaire to gather data on the residents' understanding of how to dispose of plastic garbage, how to limit plastic waste, and what changes to their lifestyles they have made to their way of life. Forty students, divided into five groups, went to survey in the 50 surrounding homes in Attur. Questions were sent out to the occupants of the dwellings, and answers were gathered. These households also received the booklets with the zero-plastic methods in the first phase carried out in June, 2023. After 4 months, it was also intended to return to these homes and evaluate any changes in behaviour and the decrease in plastic waste.
Additionally, they also educated people about how to manage plastic garbage and the possible health risks associated with burning plastic. The students emphasized to quit the single-use bag, adopt any bags at home and simply re-use. Single Use Plastics that are used once cannot be readily recycled. Its extreme low weight causes it to litter, wind up in landfills, drains, and our waterways, posing a risk to the environment. AITE has consistently upheld societal welfare and fulfilled its obligations to the local community. This project is a modest step in addressing the terrible and difficult plastic pollution that is destroying the ecosystem as a whole. And we think that when everyone works together to Beat Plastic, the world can change.
The second phase was carried out in 22nd and 23rd November, 2023 at these panchayat areas, survey and awareness programs. Students of 5 members in 8 groups cleaned the premises of Mullurkara Panchayath and Paanjal Panchayat, also conducted second phase of survey and awareness programs in the same houses to know the impact of the first phase campaign. A small initiative can be a great change and thus the importance of proper disposal, reusing, reducing the usage, find alternatives were emphasised in the campaign.
